Thalia's Retreat: Timeless Comedy for Whippersnappers

During training to be a Census Enumerator, it came up that few people had heard of, much less were familiar with, The Firesign Theatre. Unacceptable.

I put together a sampler of comedy. My initial goal was to use only pre-1970 spoken comedy (roughly FT era) but bent the rules for Shockwave Radio Theater, Steven Wright, and a few new recordings of old comics. Mostly, these are classic routines and songs. I could, of course, only use stuff from my own collection. I don't have a lot of Bill Cosby or George Carlin on CD. Heck, I don't have a lot of older FT; the cuts are from their Best Of Compilation, and I have their most recent CDs.

Behind the cut are 84 mp3s. What comedy would you want today's Young Whippersnappers to know of?

Did Firesign do "Bear Whiz Beer?" That's an oldie stuck in my brain.

I'd include some SCTV - The Schmenge Brothers and/or Doug & Bob Mackenzie. You wouldn't go wrong with some Arrogant Worms either; they're a bit newer though.

Yes, they did Bear Whiz Beer. I don't recall if it's on the CD but probably. I don't know of SCTV released albums, they were mostly tv sketch comics.

Lots of newer stuff, but the whippersnappers probably know about that. I could do a whole compilation about filk/Dementia Music/etc. but a) it's too recent and b) I'd rather have them buy the CDs. I'm not worried about costing Henny Youngman some royalties...

Homecoming Queens Got A Gun - Julie Brown
A Christmas Carol - Tom Lehrer
Our Home Town - Tom Lehrer
Existential Blues - Tom "T-Bone" Stankus
Dead Puppies - Ogden Edsel
Kinko the Clown - Ogden Edsel
Love Tap - Barnes and Barnes
Moose Turd Pie - (I can't remember!)

At the risk of being too modern, some Cirque Du So What?

The latter by U Utah Philips, among many others. (My father told a similar story about WWII soldiers...)

I probably should have included A Christmas Carol, but I forgot. I got enough Lehrer in to whet appetites.

You need some Shelley Berman on there. I'd recommend the Airplane routine or the phone call to the department store.

Some Jonathon Winters, but I'd have to go look at my collection, and that computer is being used by someone else at the moment.

I'm sure I'll think of more when I manage to wrestle that computer away from my eldest.

Notes toward a modular comedy

Hmm... note to self: Fix annotation such that the Monty Python "Side One" and "Side Two" refer to "Monty Python's Previous Record". Add in the Allan Sherman songs already in my system and therefore didn't pop out on top, "Hello Mudda, Hello Faddah", "Sarah Jackman" and "One Hippopatami". Move "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park" with the other Lehrer, add "A Christmas Carol".

Acquire more comedy. Play DJ.

ETA: And I was sure I'd included "New Horizons In Music Appreciation" by PDQ Bach.
