My Mom, Volunteer of the Year

My mother, Ethel Grodzins Romm, and I are going to Antarctica via Washington DC for Thanksgiving. However, she's starting a day later than planned

The following is an e-mail sent to family members, reprinted here with her permisson.

Grodzins Home for Tsunami Orphans / Ethel Romm to Receive Volunteer of Year Award

To the Members and Friends of the Grodzins Family –

I am pleased to present the attached photo essay of Grodzins Home for Tsunami Orphans, taken over the last month during Ramadan in Aceh, Sumatera part of the e-mail, not included for LJ.  I think you will agree with me that these children look extremely well adjusted for having lost their entire families less than a year ago. Different from children who have lost parents, which are horrendous enough; these kids have lost every brother and sister, aunt and uncle, grandmother and grandfather. They are alone in the world, except for us.

I am also pleased to inform you that the Board of Directors of Orphans International America has decided to give Ethel our Volunteer of the Year Award, which will be presented at our fourth annual benefit to be held Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7pm. The event will take place in Manhattan’s Harvard Club, and of course you are cordially invited.

In my keynote address on Nov. 22 I will state that there are two families in the world without which Orphans International would not operate. The other family is from Peru.  I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the life-altering assistance you have offered our children.  Please make sure that Ethel’s entire family learns of her good work.  It has been my pleasure to learn so much from her.

Warm regards,
Jim Luce, Founder
