The Genius Button

Spurred by dreamshark, I upgraded to iTunes 8.0 and tried out the Genius feature. Picking one of my favorite three or four songs to start, I wind up with:

Rosebud In June – Steeleye Span 3:39
Tam Lin - Fairport Convention 7:13
Cannily Cannily - Tim Hart & Maddy Prior 2:24
It's Raining - Peter, Paul & Mary 4:08
For Lovin' Me - Peter, Paul & Mary 2:08
Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain - Ladysmith Black Mambazo 2:19
Robbery With Violins - Steeleye Span 1:50
Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan 3:15
Reno Nevada - Mimi & Richard Fariña 3:11
A Chance Counsel - Richard Buckner 4:50
The Train - Roches, The 3:30
Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Ian & Sylvia 3:17
There Ain't No Bugs on Me - Jerry Garcia & David Grisman 4:40
Thomas the Rhymer - Steeleye Span 3:15
The Lark In The Morning, Rakish Paddy, Fox-Hunter's Jig (Medley) - Fairport Convention 4:08
Child Of Mine - Bill Staines (with Mellissa Javors) 3:35
Bells of Rhymney The - Seeger, Pete 5:40
Cripple Creek - Leo Kottke 2:00
Sex is for Children - Roches, The 3:38
Another Time - Pearls Before Swine 3:06
The Grey Funnel Line - Maddy Prior & June Tabor 3:04
Ballad Of Spring Hill Spring Hill Disaster - Peter, Paul and Mary 3:13
500 Miles - Peter, Paul & Mary 2:46
Saucy Sailor - Steeleye Span 5:47
Walk Right In - Rooftop Singers 2:37

A good list of my favorites, to be sure, and lots of songs either Celtic Folk/Rock or Folk, and even a few that I'm not familiar with (having been added to my iTunes by various downloads or mix CDs). Much as I like the Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Leo Kotke, they don't seem to relate much to the original Steeleye Span song, which is an a cappella (maybe that's why the LBM?) pean to a fertility ritual.

Hmm... it won't even try "Once In A Lifetime" by Big Daddy or "Fabulous" by Happyhead or "Stealing Like A Hobbit" by the great Luke Ski or "The Biggest Ball of Twine In Minnesota" by Weird Al or "High Hopes" by Bing Crosby (hey, the song won an Academy Award)... ah, finally

The Holy Egoism Of Genius - The Art Of Noise 7:57
Livin' Thing - Electric Light Orchestra 3:33
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 2:33
Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 2:59
Peace Train - Stevens, Cat 4:04
Black Dog - Led Zeppelin 4:54
Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard - Paul Simon 2:44
Regiment - Brian Eno & David Byrne 4:11
The Name Of The Game - ABBA 4:00
I Am...I Said (reprise) - Diamond, Neil 2:38
Werewolves Of London - Warren Zevon 3:28
Approximate Mood Swing No. 2 - The Art Of Noise 2:14
I Predict A Riot - Kaiser Chiefs 3:57
Take Me To The River - Talking Heads 5:03
Club Foot - Kasabian 3:35
Evil Woman - Electric Light Orchestra 4:19
Do You Believe in Magic - The Lovin Spoonful 2:08
Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants 3:16
Hocus Pocus - Focus 3:23
Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 2:42
You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon 4:41
Rock & Roll - Led Zeppelin 3:41
Metaphor On The Floor - The Art Of Noise 2:06
In The Summertime - Mungo Jerry 3:34
California Dreamin' - Mamas & The Papas, The 2:41

Again, some of my favorite songs along with a few I haven't heard more than once (if that). It's hard to connect the original song (about the composer Debusse) with ABBA, or the ABBA segueing into the reprise of Neil Diamond. But what the heck.

15 minute verdict: A different way to do a Party Shuffle, but not a better one. The only winner is The Apple Store, since it will try to find similar CDs/songs I don't have. It's actually okay for that, but I'm not in a buying mood and snobbishly prefer aiff files anyway. So there.
