New Tilley Hat

Yikes! It's snowing. And post-election quick takes

Good heavens, it's finally light enough, and I see it's snowing outside. Well, it's Nov. 7, so I'm not exactly surprised, but it's been one of the better Minnesota Autumns in memory. Time to switch coats.

I'm in a football pool at the bar across the street. I'm currently tied for second overall, though I haven't won a week yet. That'll probably change when I check today. Comparing picks with a friend, he was surprised that I picked Washington to beat Pittsburgh on Monday night. The urban legend is: The outcome of Washington Redskins home football games has correctly predicted the winner of every U.S. presidential election since 1936. That is, if Washington loses their last game before the election, the incumbent party loses. As dryly notes, "Not anymore" since the contest concluded that Gore should have won the 2000 election...

Still, Pittsburgh won on Nov. 3 and the incumbent party lost. Perhaps I should have factored Obama's likely victory into my pick. While I'm not a great believer in such superstitions, I'll take this election outcome over my football predictions any time.

Less than 24 hours after their respective acceptance and concession speeches, Obama and McCain were featured in a South Park episode... that contained lines from the speeches. Several of them. The plot of the show was amusing (based loosely on Ocean's 11, iirc) and would have been similar if McCain won. Still, the turnaround time for a major animation show was astonishing. Kudos.
