Happy 10th Anniversary, Emerald Starship
Last week was the Tenth Anniversary of my owning a car. The first (and only) car I've ever owned was bought new at the end of May 1999. A 1999 Mazda Protegé
. It has just over 43,000 miles on it. No, I don't drive a lot, one of the reasons I didn't really need a car until I started getting jobs out in the burbs during the dot com bubble.
I wanted a dark blue one, with ABS, but they didn't have that in stock. The ABS was secondary, and the dark green was pretty close. Technically, the color is "Emerald Mica". One of the smarter things I did was buy a small amount of paint to use as touch-up for scratches and such.
I don't usually name my possessions, but naming cars is semi-traditional, so I thought about it. The particular model of Protegé is the "ES", with those letters printed on the side. Since the color has an official designation, I didn't have to travel too far to get to "Emerald Starship". I don't use the name a lot, but I'll pop for it on the Decaversary.
(I was going to get a Saturn, and had negotiated with the dealer for the one I wanted. I went into the dealership literally check in hand. At the last minute, they pulled a bait-and-switch and I just left, never to return. Boy, was that the right decision.)
