My brother Joe will be interviewed by Keith Olbermann at around 8:15 (EST). Should be fun. / (Actually, the night before)
Thanks to all veterans out there. We honor the warrior if not the war. [on Veteran's Day]
This is madness R2!

It's been 34° in Mpls for over 24 hours, day and night. That happens every now and then, as some air mass just decides we're the cat's meow. The fluffy white stuff is a net plus, but gray slushy days I can live without.
Not only do Republicans lie and not believe the truth, they _insist_ that "news" can lie to gullible conservatives. Ah, the new America of the Tea Party. Fair and Balanced from Carol Kennedy, who can tell truth from truthiness.
Apple to Apple… at last.
The Bush administration didn't care whether you were guilty or not as Big Government Republicans just wanted taxpayers to shell out for incompetence. It took a while, but Atty Gen. Holder is finally reversing this policy. Sometimes, the differences between Tea Party Republicans and the Democratic Party take a while to come to full relief. But the differences can be stark.
Rangel is likely to face censure but not expulsion. That seems too light. While he wasn't convicted of selling his vote, which is his defense against being a "corrupt politician", he used his position for monetary gain. He had to resign his committee chairmanship. I was hoping he'd simply lose his election, but voters overwhelmingly returned him for a 20th term. One that should end now.
Baron Dave Romm came in first at Trivia, for the fourth week in a row, because he knew who was the first band to cast over the internet, and who the Greek Goddess of Wisdom and War is. ("You're Riding The Shockwave", our 1995 Minicon Live Stage Show, would have been the second netcast if our ducks had been in a row.)
One of the most bizarre episodes of a bizarre series. At the time, I was too young to catch the hip references, but now I see where Lord Buckley collides with Jackson Pollack as seen through the eyes of Bob Clampett, voiced by Scatman Crothers. The Beany & Cecil DVD is well worth it.
Baron Dave Romm finally finished the DVDs of the full movie of brother Joe's surprise party in June. Now I bear gifts for Thanksgiving in DC.
Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2009: Took public transportation to the airport. Time from my door to being through security: 1 hour. 2010: Got a ride to the airport. Time from door through extra-heavy security... 25 minutes.
I'm an "experience traveler" and was through, without the scanning, faster than at any time since 9/11. Lots more people in TSA. Thank heaven for government jobs!
Baron Dave Romm has returned to Mpls. Was x-rayed and groped in DC, but it still only took ten minutes to go through security. Got back in time for Trivia, which my team won for the fifth week in a row. Take THAT, terrorism.
Happy Channukkah all! May your flame burn longer than expected.
Baron Dave Romm's team came in first at Trivia, for the sixth week in a row, even though he forgot the name of Alice's cat in Alice in Wonderland, but did know which sea is the largest. Go us!

Paper: "Patterns of Radicalization: Identifying the Markers and Warning Signs of Domestic Lone Wolf Terrorists in Our Midst", gleaned from Bruce Schneier . Terrorists like McVeigh, Kaczynski and Rudolph considered themselves "survivalists", what we would now call "Libertarians" or "tax dodging gun nuts". [Subsequent events in Tuscon made this even more relevant]
Four days after winning the recount, it's finally official: Mark Dayton is Minnesota's next governor. Tom Emmer, a classic Big Government Republican, spent a great deal of taxpayer money on frivolous challenges and didn't alter the election day results very much.
"Complete Map of Optimal Tic-Tac-Toe Moves", from XKCD. Really, all of the possible moves in the game, and when to make them. I'm amazed that no one's charted this out before. With rollover text.
Baron Dave Romm is just soooo happy he lives across the street from virtually every useful place. Carole Vandal and I braved the snow to have breakfast (and turn in our football picks: yes, we went with the Giants over the Vikes), stocked up at the SuperValue and came home... Total walk: Less than three blocks. And boy, are we exhausted.
If the proponents of a new Vikings stadium really really really wanted to make their point, they would hurry up and convert the Twin's field for them to play by tomorrow. Yeah, outdoor football on a day when the indoor stadium suffered from the weather. I still think an outdoor football stadium is a dumb idea for MInnesota, but the irony of the situation is delicious.
Everyone with a ticket will get preferred seating (along the 50-yeard line). Everyone else can get in for free. Refunds given for everyone with a ticket who can't make it; most, I suspect. The Viking's luck is holding true: In a must-win game, they don't even have home field advantage.

"[US] usage of sedative drugs has shot off the charts: between 1997 and 2004, Americans more than doubled their yearly spending on antianxiety medications like Xanax and Valium". The "What, Me Worry" hippies slid into the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" Yuppies which have become the "Holy Crap!" Fox "News" generation. No wonder the racist nutjobs have taken over the already frightened Republican Party. fear and anxiety
Gorgeous underwater photography. This was sent to me as a slide show with different music, and you can find the images in other forms on the web.
Baron Dave Romm came in first at Trivia, for the eighth time in nine weeks, because he knew who the Roman god of Time was, and because Carole Vandal and Vanessa Corwin added to the proceedings.
For more than a decade, I've been saving unusable CDs and DVDs, with the intention of giving them to a costumer. New blank CDs are cheap, but does anyone want a box of several hundred (I think) disks from various sources? You'll have to pick them up (or arrange a pick up). All sorts of nifty disks, plus boring ones.
"Abstract Thought is a Warm Puppy" by Art Spiegelman. Wait for the New Yorker archive to load, read p. 61 (it can be magnified), then flip to the next two pages.
Cecil Adams updates a classic in his own inimitable way. Let's just say his existence can't be definitely ruled out. Celebratory festivities, everyone!
Baron Dave Romm won the first game of Starfarers of Catan he ever played. Won with major luck: Snake eyes were rolled twice in one round. Company was great, game was only okay. Might retire undefeated.
Happy birthday Eric Forste, Graham Leathers , W Scott Lockwood III and cousin Yehoshua! Celebratory Festivities, everyone!
Ah, the bananas are finally ripe. A nice little desert at lunch for Alan King's birthday, the first day of Kwanzaa, the anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal and Boxing Day. Winding down the day, waiting for the Vikings game... which has just been cancelled. More lolling around than usual. *yawn*
I'm trying to purge and consolidate my books. I don't mind selling/donating books I've read and am unlikely to read again, but am keeping too many favorites, and I can't seem to be able to let go of a book I haven't read yet.
Went to Uncle Hugo's. Came back with fewer books but fewer bucks as well. *sigh*
Baron Dave Romm just finished watching the last DVD of "Lost". I've now seen all the episodes, all the commentaries, all the extras.
Final verdict: Not worth it.
Almost 40º here in Mpls, and the snow is melting. Which means that tomorrow will be icy when the temps are in single digits. Careful driving for New Years!
As I head off to my 33rd MN-StF New Year's Party, I see all the people being thankful the secular year is over. To be sure, I wouldn't want the alternative. Still, the last dozen lunar cycles was an eventful time for me, full of ups and downs. The ups outweigh the downs.
