The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins -- the lost footage

The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, the original aired video.

Leonard Nimoy and Buffalo Springfield on the same bill. At the time, in 1967, Malibu-U was a summer replacement show, a Hullabaloo rip-off with more sand. I only watched this one episode, and only because of Nimoy. Unfortunately for me, it was opposite Star Trek. This new (to the net) video is closer to my memory of the broadcast than the more official, edited, release virtually everyone has seen. The program was another failed attempt by The Establishment to co-opt the Youth Movement. Even as a twelve-year-old, I didn't believe girls on the beach would wear sweatshirts. They tried -- they got some good acts -- but it didn't take. I switched channels back and forth from Star Trek to Malibu-U until Nimoy was on, then went back to Trek.

My memory wasn't quite perfect, alas. I've been saying that the show was opposite the third season opener, but the timing indicates it was on opposite a rerun from the first season. A show that I hadn't seen, I'm sure of that, because I was annoyed that I missed chunks of Star Trek to catch a few minutes of Nimoy trying to be hip. Perhaps that's why some of the first season was new to me when they came around on reruns many years later. I should get the DVDs and see the whole run.

In any event, the first fan letter I ever wrote was to Malibu-U, asking how I could get a copy of The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. They replied: Check your local record store. Their lack of marketing acumen is another reason why the show failed.

For musicians, the site has the lyrics and the chords. Hint hint. To my knowledge, only The Nick Atoms has covered the song.

Shockwave today will feature artists appearing at Marscon and/or on the Marscon fundraiser CD. We're off next week due to Black History Month programming, then Marscon the following week. I'll let you know about the new schedule, which Shockwave is not on, and how you can help convince the station to rectify this ommission.
